Follow Sturt’s Steps Touring Route to Milparinka, an award-winning heritage town, and stay for a few days in the Milparinka Caravan Park.
Located forty kilometres south of Tibooburra and just a short drive west of Corner Country’s Silver City Highway, Milparinka has been transformed from the virtual ruins of a 1880s gold mining town into 2020s award-winning tourist town. Whether it is history, the environment or art that is your passion there is something for everyone in Milparinka.
The Milparinka Caravan Park backs onto the Milparinka Heritage Precinct. It’s a perfect spot to stay for a night or two, or to use as a longer-stay base for exploring nearby Sturt’s Cairn or even Cameron Corner, Sturt National Park and Tibooburra.
Entry fees to the Caravan Park are payable at the Heritage Precinct Visitor Information Centre in the courthouse. Once admitted the park caretakers will be on-hand to help guide you to your chosen site and answer any questions about the park that you may have.

Guests are also welcome to use the Post Office for sunset drinks with new friends, the Precinct volunteers or the caravan park caretakers.
Powered sites with drive through bays
The Milparinka Caravan Park has been landscaped into drive-through bays, eight of which are powered, and separated by native gardens. There is also an expansive area suitable for tents or for those who prefer to bush camp.

Spotless ablutions and a laundry are adjacent to the park. Some bays have fire-pits and there are portable pits available to use. Wood is available for sale during the winter.
Bunk-house Accommodation
Bunk-house style accommodation is now also available in three Aboriginal themed “gunyahs” that can each accommodate four visitors. They are ideally suited to school groups and those preferring to self-cater during their travels.

Each has a small kitchenette and a deck overlooking the nearby creek. They are located adjacent to spotless amenities and a short walk across to a camp kitchen equipped with gas barbecues, sinks and tables and benches. Bedding is available if required.
Dump point
A motorhome dump point is located about 500 metres from the park.
Pet friendly
The park is also pet friendly but dogs should remain on a leash. A Starlink connection is available for guests.
What to do in Milparinka

The rock, mineral and fossil collection is spectacular, and the preservation work undertaken on the former post-office is a remarkable feat of engineering and design. This space features the post and telegraph history as well as information about the construction and management of the “dog fence”.
At night, marvel at the clarity of outback night skies with a visit to the dark sky park and planisphere just a few metres away from the Caravan Park.
A walking tour guide to Milparinka is available and provides insight into the life and times of Milparinka.
The Albert Milparinka Hotel is open for meals.
What to do in the region.
The historic sites associated with Sturt’s expedition are located on Mount Poole Station, 14 kms west of Milparinka. These include Poole’s Grave and Sturt’s cairn and are worth the short drive to the sites. A climb to the top of Mount Poole provides expansive and magnificent views of the district, and of course, the cairn itself.

The Sturt’s Steps Touring route safely guides visitors to Cameron Corner at the junction of the neighbouring states, and back through Sturt National Park and the Wild Deserts attractions at Fort Grey.
Tibooburra is forty kilometres north along the Silver City Highway and is a must-see destination that includes two historic hotels, a new museum and a whole lot of character. It is also the headquarters of the expansive neighbouring Sturt National Park.
