Rising from a perfectly flat landscape, Mount Oxley offers panoramic views of the outback that stretch for hundreds of kilometres.
Located on a private sheep station, 32km from Bourke, Bill and Denise invite you to visit Mount Oxley and spend the day or stay the night on their magnificent property.
Day visitors can enjoy 360-degree views of the outback. It is also a bird lovers paradise and one of the only places where you can look down to see wedge-tailed eagles soaring on the thermals.
Take a bushwalk and observe the native trees growing in the rocks; Silver-leafed Ironbark, Mulga, Beefwood, Western Bloodwood. Or seek out the euros, a type of Wallaroo, that spend most of the day in the rocky area (scientific name Macropus Robustus).
Camping atop Mount Oxley provides the opportunity to enjoy some of the Outback’s most magical sunsets and sunrises. There is also rustic accommodation available at the Shearer’s quarters.
We are founding members of Outback Beds and are very proud and passionate about providing the ultimate outback experience.
About Us
Bill and Denise have lived on Rossmore Station for 45 years. They were married in 1976 and have three children (Pip Claire and Tom) and six grandchildren.
Both Bill and Deinse grew up in the backcountry, around the Tilpa, Hungerford, Enngonia and Fords Bridge districts.
Denise’s great, great, great grandparents were some of the first arrivals to Bourke in 1862, and Breaker Morant worked on Bill’s family’s property (breaking in horses) in the last 1800’s.
Denise’s station talks are available to groups and must be booked in advance. Contact Denise for more information and costs.

Visit Bourke
Bourke is a unique and historically exciting town in far northwest NSW. With plenty of activities to enjoy, we recommend visitors stay for a few days.
The Back O’ Bourke Information Centre is the first port of call and not to be missed. Their friendly staff can help you arrange your entire stay, including permits for Mount Oxley.
The Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre is within the same building. Here, you can experience a journey through life in the backcountry, rediscovering the stories of Australia through modern eyes, taking you from the rich cultural history of the past through to the future of the Australian outback.
Other activities we recommend are:
- Cruise the Darling on the Paddle Vessel PV Jandra and learn more about the region’s rich riverboat history
- Visit the Back O’ Bourke Gallery – local artist Jenny Greentree is well known for her impressive landscape paintings of the outback
- Visit the Bourke Aboriginal Art Gallery with works by local artists
- Check out the Crossley Engine
- Self-drive tours of the district – pick up your map from the Back O’ Bourke Centre
Getting Here
Mount Oxley is on the Kamilaroi Highway; a 40-minute drive from Bourke or a one hour drive from Brewarrina.
It is located on private property, and a permit is required to enter. Permits can be purchased through the Back O’ Bourke Centre or by calling the station owners if the centre is not open. Detailed instructions on accessing the station will be provided with your booking.
It doesn’t often rain out this way, but the roads can become boggy and slippery when it does rain. The Bourke Shire closes the road after substantial rain as driving on the roads can damage them.
We don’t encourage travelling to Mount Oxley if the roads are wet or heavy rain is predicted. Contact us if you are unsure before your arrival, we are happy to change your booking dates if required.
